Ostiz Miguel Sánchez-signed not long ago this review in the pages of the cultural supplement of ABC : No flowers or wreaths. Auschwitz-Birkenau, 1944-1945 is one of those books on the world concentracional whose reading is difficult to erase from memory. There is one more because in that case it is the "Unoma." All are few. The author, Elina Odette (1910-1991), a young communist activist and official of the SA, the French secret army, was arrested by the Gestapo as a result of an anonymous complaint in April 1944 and deported as a Jew and resilient.
A book written to arouse in his readers were born after the Liberation, the horror of Nazism and "hope for the future of mankind." In that sense, No flowers or wreaths is parallel to the human species memorable of his contemporary Robert Antelme. A short book, rather than stark stark, blunt, no literary rhetoric, which rescues essential moments of life in the "field" required to account for the degradation and vileness to which victims can be reached in the exercise of extreme human subjugation by their executioners. Little is said about the perpetrators. Here we talk over the terms of ferocity and somnambulism of the victims.
There, in Auschwitz, the place of the routine and the sadness of no return, the expectation of death which is desired not as a lesser evil, but as a desirable good, there is no law of survival. The material and physical survival, and rebellion against the will of the annihilation of everything that makes us persons: tenderness, humanity, beauty for the horror does not dissolve everything. A will to survive that the author figure in the stick a tissue with no other object than to take it like a dash of dignity to the Liberation, and even much later when the pain is at risk of becoming humo.Un hymn to the dignity, brotherhood, hope, recovery the human condition.
